## Make a Portal

The builder at [makeportals.com/create](/content/create/index.html) is a conversational way to author a Portal (no code, under 10 minutes). Tell it what you want and it handles the rest.

### How it works

1. **Go to [makeportals.com/create](/content/create/index.html)** and sign in.
2. **Describe what you want**: paste a URL, drop a file, or just say what you're trying to share. The builder opens the site, explores it, and proposes a Portal.
3. **Refine in chat**: change the mode, tweak the greeting, add guardrails, block elements, upload knowledge (all through conversation).
4. **Deploy**: click **Deploy** when you're ready. Portal provisions sessions and gives you a shareable link.

The builder is conversational. You don't step through a wizard; you describe the Portal you want and adjust anything by chatting. It can set up guardrails, detect blocked selectors, and configure the AI for you.

### What you need to get started

| Required | Optional |
| --- | --- |
| **A goal**: what you want the Portal to show or demonstrate | **Local file zip**: if you want to run a local project instead of a live URL |
| **Documentation**: upload a PDF or paste your product docs so the AI stays accurate | Everything else (guardrails, greeting, mode, etc.) can be configured in chat |

### What you can configure

| Part | How to set it |
| --- | --- |
| **Starting point** | Paste a URL, drop a zip/HTML file, or save a logged-in browser state |
| **Mode** | Say "watch mode" or "play mode" (or the builder suggests one) |
| **AI greeting** | Type a greeting or let the builder generate one |
| **Knowledge base** | Paste text, drop a PDF, or describe your product |
| **Goal & system prompt** | Describe what the AI should demonstrate and any dos/don'ts |
| **Guardrails** | Say "block the delete button" or "only allow the dashboard page" |
| **API rules** | Say "limit /api/chat to 5 calls per minute" |

### Naming your Portal

Portal greets visitors based on the name you give it. The **first segment** of your Portal slug (everything before the first hyphen) becomes the welcome message, with the first letter capitalized.

| Slug | Visitors see |
| --- | --- |
| `Acme` | Welcome to Acme. |
| `Acme-Trial` | Welcome to Acme. |
| `Acme-Trial-Dev` | Welcome to Acme. |

So name your Portal with the product name first. If you have multiple versions (e.g. `YourProduct-v2`, `YourProduct-sales`), visitors always see **Welcome to YourProduct.** (only the URL differs).

## Portal, Share Any Browser State as a Link

**Portal is the official product and company behind makeportals.com.**

Portal lets you share any browser state as a link: websites, localhost, Chrome extensions, local files. Recipients open an isolated session and try your product instantly, no install required. They explore freely or an AI guide provides product experiences, and you get rich analytics.

## What Portal Does

Portal's mission is to make links for every product state on earth, making them reachable and explainable. Trying software shouldn't require installing it.

Portal turns any running product into a shareable session link. Not a video. Not a mockup. Not a walkthrough overlay. The real UI, fully interactive, safe to share.

## Key Features

- Share any browser state as a link (websites, localhost, Chrome extensions, local files)
- Recipients get an isolated session with no install or signup required
- AI guide trained on your docs answers questions and can provide product experiences
- Click-level analytics on every interaction
- Guardrails to block destructive actions
- No code required to set up

## Use Cases

- Replacing first sales calls with self-serve product experiences
- User research — watch where users hesitate, get stuck, or drop off
- Onboarding — drop users into a configured state with an AI guide
- Sharing Chrome extensions without requiring installs
- Sharing localhost projects as links
- DevRel workshops — everyone opens the same environment instantly

## What Portal is NOT

- Not a video
- Not a product mockup
- Not an onboarding overlay
- Not a static walkthrough
- Not automation software

Portal provides access to a real, running product instance with guardrails.
